There is a popular saying in English that states “let sleeping dogs lie,” meaning basically that if something is ok then it is best not to bother it. When year after year you handle large events or campaigns in P.R. it can be very easy to fall into a rut and rather than develop new ideas, just repeat old and faithful. After all, if it’s already achieving results, why fix what’s not broken?
This is the reason why holding post-mortem meetings are so critical in our industry. As PR professionals it’s our job, and our responsibility, to stay relevant. It is not enough to just achieve the results, but we must strive to stay on the edge, be innovative and achieve constant growth.
Five tips to get the most out of your Post-Mortem Meeting:
- Don’t wait too long after an event or campaign to hold your meeting. You need to gather information while it’s fresh on everyone’s mind.
- Prior to the meeting have your team send you their feedback, so that you can analyze the information and develop a constructive agenda. Make sure the feedback focuses on providing alternative solutions to every challenge.
- Include all team members, even those with the smallest responsibility can add valuable insight. Every perspective matters.
- Hold your meeting out of the office. The creative juices for brainstorming tend to flow better when you’re not boxed in by four walls.
- Don’t leave the feedback and ideas at the meeting. Make sure to incorporate in writing into next year’s event plan and timeline to make sure that they come to fruition.
