I have had the honor to work with this company for the past 10 years, and last October marked six years since I joined the company as a full-time employee.

During this time, I have learned a lot and have grown tremendously not only as a professional, but also as a human being. As time passes, we all grow as human beings but in my case, my co-workers taught me some things that I hadn’t learnt in my previous work experiences. Sometimes we are so busy trying to make it to the top (as most people around us), making sure that our bosses value our work, that we forget to focus and put into perspective that we work for a living, not the other way around.

Below are six things that I have learned while working at SCC and that, no matter what your profession and/or position is, will also help you succeed as a professional and balance your work/life.

· You don’t work in the ER. Your worst-case scenario is not death, and you know the saying “as long as there’s life, there’s hope.” Make a mental balance of the “pros” and “cons” of your current situation and focus on the “pros.” You may be surprised of how many good things you have in your favor.

· There is always a crisis that’s worse than yours. You just need to navigate the Internet and you’ll see that there are some PR colleagues out there having a much harder time. Before you panic, find out how others have dealt with similar crisis. If you don’t have a mentor, this may be a good time to consider getting one.

· What you may perceive as “wrong,” may go unnoticed by others. Even if you would like to, you can’t control every single aspect of your life or your work (especially when working with vendors). So, don’t agonize over the small details that are out of your control. Concentrate on what really matters and learn to let go when needed.

· Be your best critic. We all know that when something goes wrong, you have to fix it. You have to maintain your standards high; that’s true. But when something goes well thanks to your effort, learn to compliment yourself a bit. Be proud of your work and compliment your co-workers on a job well done too.

· Keep your friends close and get rid of your enemies (or negative people). You don’t have to deal with negativity, or people who you don’t like. Keep them at a professional distance, and don’t allow them to ruin your day. Surround yourself with positive people who will bring good things and will be helpful in times of crisis. Also, learn to laugh at yourself and don’t take yourself so seriously. We all deserve silly moments from time to time.

· Last but not least, be grateful. For me, being grateful is one of the most important characteristics of being a successful professional. We all have people who have helped us getting where we are at now. These people gave us advice when we needed, provided feedback, or a bigger perspective to our lives; some of them have been real mentors to us. Give them the credit they deserve.

This year, Santa Cruz Communications became a “quinceañera.” The company is celebrating 15 years of providing Public Relations services to the U.S. Hispanic market.
